What's in a name...and the future of school counseling in Florida

School Counselor vs. Guidance Counselor
I came across this article a few weeks ago and feel it is really worth sharing.

Since beginning the School Counseling program, it has been ingrained in my brain, from day 1, that the proper, up-to-date title for my future role in a school is to be School Counselor. I cringe a little each time I hear the term guidance counselor. I think to myself, that's not what I'm going to be called! I'm going to be a School Counselor. My name tag will read "School Counselor." I'm in a School Counseling program. Our professional organization is the American School Counselor Association. I knew from the very first day of class in my Intro to School Counseling course that it would be a tough road ahead for the guidance vs. school debate.

Dr. Isom writes a great article to further explain the school counselor vs. guidance counselor difference.

Shopping expedition

Yesterday, I really had the itch to do some shopping. So, while I hung out in town, waiting to meet my brother to pick up my spoiled rotten dog who prefers car rides over being left home alone, I ventured to Old Navy. Old Navy is one of those stores I can almost always guarantee I will find something to buy at. I keep my eyes peeled for those signs that indicate an item is on sale for a much lower price than it originally was and search the entire store twice. This time, I was on a mission for some colored jeans. I tried on 2 pairs, same style, one pair in white and one in red, and the white fit well...the red, on the other hand, were SNUG to say the least. I felt like a sausage being stuffed into casing. Not pretty. They were having a sale, but I decided to hold off on the jeans purchase and check the selection online, which I did today.

Valentine fashion

My outfits this week consisted of pinks, purples, neutrals, and reds. Sadly I did not get a picture of every outfit I wore but I put a lot of thought and planning into each one - more than I usually do. I also tried out a few clothing items and combinations that I had yet to wear.

At the right here is a combination I had not worn together yet. Please excuse the wrinkles, I snapped this photograph after wearing the outfit all day long. The brown pants are from Target (Mossimo Supply Co., no longer sold, similar) and both tops were purchased from LOFT Outlet. I really love this sweater, mostly because of the detail on the back. It is one of those items that is light enough for wearing in the summer.

Happy Valentines Day!

I wrote this post a few days ago and made edits each day with all intentions of actually posting it on Valentine's Day. However, yesterday was one of the toughest internship days I have had and I ended up going to bed at 9:30 after falling asleep watching tv for a while.

Today will be a better day...

So, happy (belated) Valentines Day! I confess to being a total girl and loving this holiday, even though I have been single for it the past two years.

In honor of Valentines Day, I had my nails painted red in CND Shellac Wildfire.  I LOVE Shellac! For years and years I was a paint-my-nails-every-other-day type of person. I truly appreciate getting my nails done as a treat to myself every two weeks and not having to worry about chipping or ruining my mani when I am on the go. CND Shellac has over 30 colors in their line plus the company, and some nail techs, have come up with additional layering colors in which a single layer of one Shellac color marries with a single layer of another Shellac color to create an entirely new color! For example, I once layered a translucent white color with black to create a sparkly navy nail color. Anyways, the red nails really put me in the spirit for the holiday and I went into Valentines theme mode and bought bags of candy and planned girly outfits full of pink/red/purple.In addition to spirited nails, I wore heart covered socks most of the week. I once read that wearing socks at night helps for circulation and since reading that I have worn socks to bed every night of my life. I found this particular pair at Target and picked up a few more for $1.50 each. Occasionally they are on sale for $1 each so I scoop up a few more pairs at that time. I find that colored socks make life more interesting :)

A really neat photo editor

Today I did hours upon hours of research on how to make a really cool, eye-catching blog that lots of people want to read and follow. Hopefully it is starting to show because I would hate to feel that I have wasted that much time of my life putting effort into something that nobody will care about...Okay, not really. I am a fan of my blog already and if it just ends up being something I refer back to, then so be it.

During these hours and hours of research, I came across a really neat tool. PicMonkey, the webpage pictured at right, is a photo editor. You can take any photo from your computer or the internet and edit it multiple ways, including add text, give it an edge/border, crop it, resize it, add an effect, touch it up, and more.

National School Counseling Week & a useful tech tool

I am sad to say National School Counseling Week flew by faster than I expected it to. It was quite a week at the middle school: multiple girl fights, working very hard to get a start on my small counseling groups, preparing for FCAT writes testing, guided imagery with my grief group, and so much more I feel that I am forgetting. Here is the link to an article I found and truly enjoyed that discusses the celebration of school counselors.

Each morning this past week, students at the middle school were greeted by my smiling (sometimes very awkward) face and a message for the day. The messages came from a variety of sources:

New blog title, some 30 x 30 and good information

Ever since I started blogging, I have wanted to come up with a better title than Angela's Adventures. It felt silly to have my name in the title. So I feel I have finally settled...well not really settled, but am satisfied with "adventures to remember." In working with children, going to school, being around my family and everything else in between, I feel that my life is a constant adventure and each day brings new and exciting experiences. When I wake up in the morning, I have a general plan for how my day is going to go, a schedule of places to be and things to do, yet at the end of the day when I reminisce on everything that has transpired, I feel I have just been on a great adventure. I never know what to expect even with a plan in mind. I truly love that about my life, and obviously I feel it is worth remembering and hope to spread some advice, inspiration and information through blogging.
